Sinusitis is a medical term for inflammation (irritation and swelling) of the paranasal sinuses that occurs with a viral, bacterial, or fungal infection.
Most cases are due to a viral infection and resolve over the course of 10 days. Sinusitis can be inconvenient or even painful at times, but it's usually not severe.
The paranasal sinuses (more commonly referred to as sinuses) are moist air-filled spaces within the bones of face around the nose that are lined with mucus membranes.
